Vijaya Dashami 2082 BS - Receive blessings from elders
Tika is a sacred mark placed on the forehead during Vijaya Dashami, the tenth and most important day of Dashain. It is made from a mixture of red vermillion (sindoor), rice grains (aksata), and yogurt. Elders place tika on the foreheads of younger family members along with jamara (barley grass sprouts) on the head, while giving blessings for prosperity, health, and long life. The tika symbolizes the blessing of Goddess Durga and the victory of good over evil.
- On Ghatasthapana (first day of Dashain), select a sacred room or corner.
- Place sand in a rectangular vessel (kalash or shallow container).
- Spread barley or wheat seeds evenly over the wet sand.
- Cover with a thin layer of soil and sprinkle water daily.
- Keep in a dark, cool place away from direct sunlight.
- Water daily to keep the soil moist but not soggy.
- By Vijaya Dashami (10th day), the yellow grass shoots will be 6-8 inches tall.
- Elders place the jamara on heads of family members along with tika.
